-How did you first get into metal, and why? Who were the very first bands you started listening to? Do you still listen to them now?
Well, this is strange... I'm a manga/anime fan and was watching some Inuyasha AMVs with Nightwish's She is my Sin and Over the Hills as background music - I got intrigued by the songs and started downloading Nightwish's stuff. Then one of my best friend was in her "metal period" and made me listen to System of a Down and Within Temptation.
So the first metal bands I've ever listened to are Nightwish, System of a Down, Within Temptation and Lacuna Coil - and I still adore them.
-Has your taste in metal changed since you first started listening to it? If so, how? If not, why not?
I started as a gothic metal fan and still am, only I've broadened my views: thanks to my university friends I got to know many other bands like Sonata Arctica, Therion, Lordi, Disturbed, Korpiklaani, Omnia, Rammstein, Judas Priest, Avenged Sevenfold, Avantasia, Turisas, Pain, Rhapsody, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Finntroll, Ensiferum, Gli Atroci and Nanowar (two Italian metal bands - The Atroci sing in Italian, Nanowar both in English and Italian and do parodies of Manowar, Iron Maiden and Metallica).
-What is your favorite subgenre(s) of metal? Least favorite(s)? And why?
Gothic/epic/folk/pagan/viking/heavy are my favorite subgenres but I listen to everything, really; everything but Death Metal, that I really can't stand save for some songs.
-Do you find yourself listening to a subgenre now that you've always hated, but for some reason now enjoy? If so, what?
No, never happened... for now. Only, when I was in middle school I used to hate Iron Maiden, now I love them...
-Is there a band that you still find yourself listening to (or simply obsessing over) after years and years (say, over five)?
-What role do you tend to admire most in a band? Why?
I think everyone is absolutely necessary in a band, there isn't a role I admire more than the others.
-What do you think have been the best releases in 2008 so far? What albums are you anxious to see hit stores?
Haven't bought anything really... still I discovered Autumn and they are quite good :) I'm waiting for Judas Priest's new album Nostradamus.
- Have you discovered any new bands (circa 2007 - 2008) that you'd recommend to others? If so, who? What subgenre are they in? What drew you to like them?
Autumn, Midnattsol, Turisas (they're not as famous in Italy as they are elsewhere), Nanowar; the first two are pagan/folk/gothic, I think Turisas are battle/viking metal, Nanowar are heavy (and parody :D) metal. For Nanowar I especially recommend their album "Other Bands Play, Nanowar Gay!".
-What concert(s) are you looking forward to attending in the next few months? Or, what show(s) have you attended thus far?
I've been to Nightwish's concert in Milan last February and to Victim of the System's concert (the most famous System of A Down's Italian coverband) last year; I wanted to go to the Gods Of Metal to see Iron Maiden (in Bologna), and to the Evolution Festival (in Milan) to see Korpiklaani, Sonata Arctica and In Flames... but sadly university, excavations and exams kept me from going.
-Who in the metal scene do you find most attractive? (And for the love of God, pick someone else other than Alexi Laiho!) Edit: And post a picture! I'd love to see how everyone's tastes vary!
Tuomas Holopainen (Nightwish)
(couldn't decide which one was better :D)
-Do you enjoy any female-fronted metal bands? If so, who? If not, why not?
Well, they're my favourite! Nightwish, Within Temptation, Autumn, Therion, Lacuna Coil.
-Do you get along with other female metalheads? Or, do you feel a br00tal cat fight just waiting to happen?
I get along with every metal fan I know, no matter the sex. I go along especially with females :D The only metal fan I've ever argued with (and only once) is my friend Mark, 'cause he dared to insult Nightwish and gothic metal...
-Do you go into the pit at shows, or do you stay on the sidelines?
It depends: once I tried to stay in the pit and was almost killed (I fell, was kicked, punched and pushed from side to side). So at Nightwish's concert I was on the sides, very near to the stage.
-Do you think it's difficult, in any way, being a female fan of metal? Do you get teased or doubted because of it? Etc..
I've never had any difficulty... maybe also because I have the right friends and they are almost all metal fans; but no one ever gave me a hard time for being a fan of metal, not even my parents.
